Choosing the Right Roof Color for Your Home

Buying a new roof is a big decision and a huge investment. It’s also an opportunity to completely change the look of your home. The roof color you decide on can help transform the look of your home. This can also be an intimidating decision because it’s something that you will have to live with for the foreseeable future. But where do you start? Here are some tips to help you make that final decision.

Complementary Colors

  • Your shingle color should complement (and also contrast) the colors found in your exterior elements such as: if your home has brick, wood siding, stone, stucco. You don’t want the shingles to match the exterior of your home exactly. Complimentary colors add depth and definition to your homes exterior.
  • Black, dark gray shingles give a traditional look if you have a white house.

  • Living in Florida, you have to consider how hot your roof will it. A study done by the U. S. Department of Agriculture found that dark shingled roof colors are on average 10 to 15 degrees warmer than light shingled roof colors when exposed to the same weather conditions.
  • Light shingles deflect sunlight and help keep temperatures down in hotter climates, while dark shingles absorb heat and help homes stay warm in colder climates.

HOA Rules

  • If you’re a member of a neighborhood Homeowner Association, check with them to ensure that your shingle color doesn’t violate neighborhood rules.
  • Be mindful of your neighbors. Make sure that your roof color doesn’t clash with your neighbors.

Resale Value

  • If your planning on reselling your home in the near future, you want to keep the home’s resale value in mind when your selecting your roof color. You may want to go with a bold or vibrant color, but keep in mind that prospective buyers may not have the same tastes.
