What Can Endanger your Roof?

Having a safe roof over your family’s head is important both figuratively and literally. In the literal sense, a roof’s function is to protect your loved ones from the outside elements. It adds a level of security to your home. Therefore your roofing must always be in good condition. But there are certain elements that could potentially endanger your roofing.

Don’t let your roof become endangered

One of the things that could endanger a roof is a tree or trees that may be surrounding your home. We know that trees add an immense curb appeal to your home, but they can also contribute to a number of roofing problems. For example, limbs from trees beside your home can break or fall due to heavy wind or storms. If a tree limb falls on your roof, it can create a crack and potentially damage your shingles, decking or even the inside of your attic.

Leaves and debris from the outdoors can cause build up in both your gutter system as well as your roof. This build up can become moistened by rain and develop into mulch in roof crevices. This will deteriorate the shingles and even rot the wood underneath.

Within the trees there are also animals that know these trees as home. But some of these animals can come into contact with your roof and cause great damage. Creatures like nesting birds, squirrels, raccoons, and mice can all work at taking apart your roof, which will eventually cause leaks.

Lastly, and the most obvious element that can cause damage to your roof is the sun. Your roof is constantly being exposed to the sun’s UV rays. Over time the shingles can dry out and crack. Some shingles can become so dried out that they could fall off and leave certain areas of your roof uncovered with little to no protection.
